Guest Posts — updated!

Outside of writing and promo, I’ve been immersed in a big project at the day job that’s been both overwhelming and a lot of fun.

However, the combo of day work, promo for Third Time’s the Charm, and writing has run me ragged (I can’t recall ever having worked that hard, sheesh) and I haven’t been diligent about updating here on the blog. Well, I just updated my Guest Posts and added links to posts that were written for both Extra Dirty and Third Time’s the Charm.

I feel like giving myself a gold star for housekeeping 😉

“Third Time’s The Charm,” Boston Seasons #1, is live!

978-1-78651-749-4_ThirdTime'stheCharm_1500X2400

I am super excited to be able to say that Third Time’s the Charm is live and available for purchase.

I frequently fall in love with the characters I write and that was absolutely the case with Luke and Finn. They became very special to me and I hope you love them as much as I did.

Summary:

Sometimes you have to start over to get love right.

Luke Ryan’s life is too chaotic for romance, what with running his business and being the legal guardian to his ten-year-old niece, but he’s hopeful he’ll find the right man.

Trauma surgeon Finn Thomason recently relocated from Chicago to Boston, where his focus on medicine leaves him little space for a personal life. Making a commitment to find a better work-life balance, Finn hopes he’ll also find a relationship.

Caught in an evening rainstorm, Luke shelters under a sidewalk awning…and encounters a handsome stranger. The two strike up a conversation and Finn offers to walk Luke under his oversized umbrella. Charmed, Luke accepts and asks Finn out for coffee in thanks.

Luke and Finn quickly grow close, but, as the summer draws to an end, Luke struggles to keep his connection with Finn while Finn tries to come to terms with caring for a man whose attention is pulled in many directions. Both men are scrambling to get it right, but only time will tell if they’ll learn there is more than enough room in their hearts to go around.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM SCHEDULE

Pre-Order “Third Time’s The Charm,” Boston Seasons #1

978-1-78651-749-4_ThirdTime'stheCharm_1500X2400

In 2017, I wrote a short story for submission in an anthology. I’ve never been great with word limits and wasn’t surprised when the story wasn’t accepted–it didn’t feel quite right, even to me. However, my editors at Pride liked the characters and encouraged me to consider extending the short to a longer work.

I let the story sit while I worked on The Speakeasy series, and by the time I picked it back up again, I was ready to flesh it out into a novel-length work called Third Time’s The Charm.

I’m thrilled that Third Time’s The Charm is now available for pre-order and will go into general release on May 28.

Autism Awareness Month: Blog Hop, Childhood Toys, and a Giveaway

banner autism 2019 (1)

Autism fact: Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often.

I’m new to RJ Scott’s autism blog hop and honored to participate. I paused over the theme of childhood toys, though, because in my family, toys were very much a community affair.

I grew up the oldest of four siblings–two sisters and two brothers–and virtually everything given to one kid became part-owned by the other three. We had a healthy mix of dolls and trucks and building sets, and everything was played with and argued over equally, regardless of gender stereotypes.

My parents worked at giving us each “our own” presents on birthdays and holidays, but we kids knew the score. I might be the one to unwrap a set of matching silver six-shooters, but they weren’t really mine— they were everybody’s. The exception to this unwritten rule were the children’s books my grandmother bought.

In an effort to give me something (almost) of my own, my grandmother bought children’s books through a mail order service. The books arrived monthly, starting when I was seven or eight, and I’ll never forget how exciting it felt to be handed a broad, flat package and tear it open to find out what kind of book I’d be reading next.

image1

My sister and I shared the books, and they were kept at my grandmother’s house, “safe” from our younger brothers. (The boys were deeply uninterested in books at the time anyway, so no one’s feelings were hurt.)

I probably spent hundreds of hours with those books growing up, sometimes in my sister’s company and sometimes not. I came to regard reading as a special time just for me and have discovered that my own son treats reading time with similar reverence.

As an only child, B. Coles has had more toys than any one kid needs. He’s eleven years old now, and non-electronic toys have lost a lot of their appeal. B.’s love of books and reading hasn’t wavered, however, and he takes great pleasure in receiving books. The photo above is of his current collection (and, he’s reminding me, his Pokémon cards in the yellow tubs on the bottom shelf).

For my giveaway, I’d like to gift someone a $5 Amazon gift card. Just comment below and tell me what your favorite toy or plaything was as a child and whether you had to share it. I’ll choose a name next Thursday.

Extra Dirty, The Speakeasy Book #2

If you haven’t checked out my latest release, it’s Extra Dirty, Book #2 in The Speakeasy series, which I co-write with Brigham Vaughn. It’s a lot of fun, if I do say so myself. 🙂

Love, served extra dirty.

Jesse Murtagh loves his life as a wealthy bisexual businessman dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. With a circle of friends he trusts implicitly, he enjoys a successful career in his family’s business and as co-owner of Under, an uptown speakeasy, with his friend with benefits, Kyle McKee.

Music teacher and part-time DJ Cameron Lewis lives modestly in a DUMBO loft and isn’t interested in serious relationships. However, he’s always up for some casual fun.

Doing a favor for his friend Carter Hamilton, Jesse meets Cam and is immediately charmed. When Jesse discovers Cam’s other life as a DJ, he is further intrigued. Viewing Cam as a challenge, Jesse pulls out all the stops, but his usual methods to avoid serious relationships fail. Though Cam has no intention of becoming attached, he begins to fall for Jesse, unaware that Jesse’s feelings are changing.

Afraid of heartbreak, Cam pulls away, leaving Jesse bewildered and hurt. They remain friends until a series of misunderstandings widens the rift to breaking point. When Cam steps in to help Jesse through a family crisis, they realize they care for each other more than they’ve been willing to admit. Jesse and Cam don’t want a traditional relationship, but can they build a future that makes them both happy?

Hearts to Spare: Tidal Flash Fiction

Hearts To Spare Kindle Book Cover 2I’m terribly late posting this, but for Valentine’s Day this year, I took part in the “Be Mine” Valentine’s Day Bash in Ana Newfolk’s Facebook group Café Lima – Ana Newfolk’s Hangout. Participating authors were asked to write a 500-word flash fiction of a pairing from an existing work and I knew right away that I wanted to write about Carter and Riley from Wake and Calm, my books in the Tidal Series I co-wrote with Brigham Vaughn.

When we wrote Wake and Calm, I took on the character of Carter. This time around, however, I thought I’d do something different and get into Riley’s head. It was even more fun than I expected and made me miss the characters so much, I plan to go back to write more extras about them when I have a little time. Hearts to Spare can be read here on my blog or as part of the free Be Mine compilation, which includes all of the flash fiction contributed during the Facebook event.

Pre-Order — “Extra Dirty,” Speakeasy 2

ExtraDirty_9781786517098_Ebook_1500x2400

Brigham Vaughn and I have been writing together for some years now, but I get super jazzed every time a book we’ve crafted gets closer to its release date. I’m definitely excited about Extra Dirty, which is Book 2 in The Speakeasy series.

The book’s working title was “On the Rocks” but, as luck would have it, a book by almost the same title was accepted only days before our manuscript. Brigham and I were undaunted, however, because we knew we’d find and even better title. We engaged in a furious round of posting in our book’s Slack channel and happened upon Extra Dirty without much trouble. Once we’d stopped laughing, we realized that it really was the perfect title and that Jesse Murtagh, one of our main characters, would be thrilled beyond all belief.

Extra Dirty is available for pre-order and will go into general release on March 26. There’s a delicious excerpt on the book’s page here on my blog.
